We have often heard the quote, “Nothing is certain but death and taxes.” The speaker desires to emphasize three things: promises can be broken; eventually everyone pays taxes; and eventually everyone dies. Death is a certainty we begin to come to grips with at a young age.
In preparing to attend a funeral service, a mom was prepping her young son on what to say and do. She told our son about the receiving line and how, when it was their turn to speak to the family, he should say “I am sorry for your loss.” In a mixture of confusion and frustration, he immediately responded with, “Why should I be sorry? I didn’t kill her.”
We got a good laugh out of his innocent response, but death is no laughing matter. It strikes the young and the old. No one escapes its earthly grip. However, the good news for believers is that it is not the last word. Jesus Christ conquered death, and through faith in Him, we have eternal life.
